Daylilies:
A Capital Affair!

Open Gardens

Gardens of Betsy Palmer Thompson  33 Stirrup Drive, East Greenbush, NY 12061 Phone (518) 479-4372

Briaridge is an all-season country garden, condensed to fit on a 22' by 200' townhouse lot, in the middle of a six-home building. It takes its name from the neighborhood, Briaridge II, and originally brambly ridge that forms the back of the property. The gardens consist of six distinct garden rooms, each with its own microclimates, exposures and color scheme. Betsy Thompson, proprietor, gardener and maintenance worker, grows about 175 daylily cultivars here, representing a range of hybridizers, forms and colors. She is partial to forms that can make for interesting photos, as garden photography is one of her passions. Hosta and iris enthusiasts will also find a generous sprinkling of these plants on suitable sites. Betsy welcomes gardeners for tours by appointment, at any time of year.

Gardens of Jim and Linda Healey 15 Wood St., Albany, NY 12203 Phone: 518-438-1819

Jim and Linda’s property has the advantage and disadvantage of bordering on a lovely running brook. The advantage is the scenic beauty and delightful sound of running water.  The disadvantage is the 20 foot drop!  The gardens are informal and feature three  terraced levels.   There is a nice garden swing and a small fish pond as well as several stand-alone fountains. The focus is a mixed perennial garden with emphasis on numerous daylilies.  At this time we have about 450 named varieties, as well as a large selection of hosta.  Our gardens are always under construction as we add new things and move around old ones, but this “living garden” is what makes us happy.  Please stop by for a cold drink!

DIRECTIONS: from exit 24 N.Y. Thruway (I-90):  Stay to the extreme right as you exit the toll booths.   You will need to take the first exit ramp on the right and merge onto I-87 south.   Continue to the end of the Northway and get into the left lane.  Turn left onto Western Ave. Go approximately one and a quarter miles to Upper Hillcrest Ave. and turn right.   There is a Dunkin Donuts on the corner.  Go down a hill and up, stop at the stop sign, then continue until the road bears left and changes to Wood Street. They are the fourth house on the left. You can park on the lawn across from the house.

From the Best Western Hotel parking lot, turn left and go to Upper Hillcrest Ave.  Follow the above directions.  The Healey Garden is only about 5 minutes from the hotel.

OPEN: 10:00-2:00, both Friday, July 16 and Sunday, July 18.

Gardens of Carol Rehbaum  317 Washington Ave., Albany, NY 12206   Phone: 518-465-1851

Not all gardeners are blessed with an acre of ground.  Carol Rehbaum has applied her creativity to a small 21’ x 50’ city lot in downtown Albany and created a bit of paradise.  After 14 years of work, her collection of daylilies is now around 100 different cultivars.  By gradually reducing the number of shade producing trees, she’s made more space for her beloved plants.  The garden is informal, with nary a single blade of grass, but greenery and flowers abound, both in-ground and in containers.  Carol has also had to work with a three story brick wall on one side and stockade fencing, but she has done it so creatively you will hardly notice!

DIRECTIONS: From hotel, turn right onto Western Ave. At "Y", bear left, staying on Western Ave. The Rehbaum house is on the left directly opposite the entrance to Washington Park. Distance is approx. 3 1/2 miles.

OPEN: Friday, July 16, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 18, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Gardens of Hannelore and Ralph Passonno 225 Pinewoods Avenue, Troy, NY Phone: 518-272-4143

Hannelore’s garden begins at the front of the house and continues along the driveway to the rear.  Garden rooms abound, and are filled with a mix of daylilies, hosta, perennials, annuals, shrubs, fruit trees, and berry bushes.  There is also a greenhouse and a large vegetable garden. The various garden rooms are complemented by marble and bronze statues, assorted benches and some truly wonderful garden art.  There are 150+ daylilies of all forms and colors from a wide range of hybridizers.  A garden railroad runs around the granite fountain garden.  A running commentary will be heard coming from the chicken coup at the entrance to the back garden, as it is home to our Guinea Hen Garden Patrol. Recently the Passonnos have added two honey bee hives at the rear of one of the back gardens. Bees usually aren't troubling to garden visitors, but for anyone with bee allergies, it's a consideration
