Stanley Saxton Seedling Award

The Stanley Saxton Seedling Award was first proposed by the Hudson-Adirondack Daylily Society as a means of focusing increased attention on Region 4 hybridizing. Many ADS members in Region 4 actively hybridize and have produced high-quality seedlings deserving of the Region’s attention. This award emphasizes plants that not only survive in Region 4, but also bloom and increase well.

Specifications

• The award is for the best unregistered seedling seen at the yearly regional meeting.
• It is awarded each year that there is a bloom-season regional meeting and will not be awarded from photographs.
• Region 4 hybridizers may submit up to three unregistered seedlings (three to five fans each) the year before judging, to allow the plants to establish.
• All seedlings are planted together in one tour garden for consistent evaluation and equal treatment.
• Seedlings from purchased seed or purchased seedlings are not eligible.
• Seedlings are grown under number only; hybridizer identity is not shown on the label.
• The winner is decided by votes of attendees at the regional meeting; the host club selects the physical award.
• No pollen may be taken and no pods may be set while the plants are in the guest garden; scapes are removed the season before bloom to encourage increase.
• After the meeting, plants are returned to the hybridizer, who may choose to keep, auction, or donate them.
